Chinese-made laminate flooring: get rid of it!

A really interesting story broke a couple of weeks back, and if you’re watching this video you yourself may have been affected by it. On March 1st, 2015, 60 Minutes aired a pretty shocking expose on big box stores and some very deceitful practices they’ve been employing to mislead customers about the dangers of the cheap Chinese-made laminate flooring they sell. I’ve been warning my customers about the poor quality of Chinese-made laminate flooring for as long as I’ve been in this business. It looks cheap, it feels cheap, and it falls apart fast. And my competitors, the big box stores, are selling it like crazy because it is cheap. But it’s recently been discovered that the problem runs deeper than just its poor quality. This stuff is actually dangerous. Laminate flooring contains a carcinogen called formaldehyde -it’s in the glue that holds the wood particles together. And that’s nothing to worry about, if those levels are kept in check. In the 60 Minutes piece, their reporters discovered that the Chinese-made laminate that the big box stores can’t keep on the shelves contains levels of formaldehyde that are way beyond safe standards. If this stuff is in your house, now is the time to either call an environmental engineer to get it tested, or rip it out and get it replaced with a higher quality product, and one that won’t make you sick.
